Under 16s

The Brammer UK Ltd Under 16 Squad

Second Test Match

The Boys managed to claim the series victory when they won the Second Kwik Cricket Test Match at the Kingholm last Monday - but by a much reduced margin of 15 runs.

The Boys again won the toss and decided to bat. After a slowish start, Ross and Aidan, batting second, accelerated the total, managing five boundaries in their first three overs in a partnership of 31. Brandon and Callum continued with steady progress and a good last over including a six from Cameron took the Boys' total to 278.

The Girls, who had bowled less wides than last week, couldn't cut down on the number of times they were dismissed and found themselves on only 229 after three pairs had batted.

However some aggressive hitting from Charlotte Bryden, including a six to cover point, had the Boys worried as the total suddenly started shooting up. Charlotte and Anna produced 16 runs in an excellent last over to bring the total to 263.

One more good over from the Girls might have made the difference but, overall, taking part is more important than winning.

Boys Win First Kwik Cricket Test

St Michael's Happy Faces Girls played their first ever competitive fixture against their male counterparts at Kingholm Park last Monday, but the Boys played the better cricket to win by 52 runs.

After Aidan won the toss and decided to bat, all four of the Boys' sets scored freely although Emma Lumb, Charlotte Bryden and Mhairi Callaghan all picked up useful wickets. The Girls' mistake was failing to protect the boundary but there was little they could do to stop a late flurry of sixes from Elliot and Harris as the lads moved to a very respectable 292 under the Kwik Cricket format.

Harris also proved a menace with the ball and there were a couple of run outs to slow the Girls' progress after a reasonable start by Charlotte Bryden and Catherine Callaghan. Emma and Mhairi added a good 21 for the third partnership including a six from Emma as they managed a respectable 240 by the end of the game.

Another Improved U13 Performance

Happy Faces/Lockerbie again lost to Galloway in an afternoon friendly fixture at the Kingholm yesterday, but had the satisfaction of knowing they at least managed to score more runs from the bat than the visitors.

Galloway batted first on the K1 artificial with a shortened boundary inviting stroke play. Although Cammy McNay bowled superbly from the top end, the high bounce kept taking the ball over stump height and it was Ryan Geddes and Jamie Crawford who got amongst the wickets to dismiss five of the Galloway top order. Gianni Copland also managed two wickets and Daniel Veitch, having finally opted for left arm spin, showed that his accuracy is much improved.

Unfortunately the old enemy wides marred the performance of all the bowlers except McNay and, with the aid of some decent hits and good running between the wickets, Galloway were able to bat out the twenty overs and reach 116 for 7.

McNay (16) and skipper Ian Naysmith (12) put up a bright reply against the accurate Galloway bowling, punishing anything that was outside leg stump. At at the ten over stage the home side were pretty much up with the required run rate. This lead was followed for a while by Jamie Crawford and Daniel Veitch but a devastating return spell by Galloway opening bowler Glen removed the key batters.

The home side again showed great obstinacy as defeat became inevitable. Ryan Geddes typically refused to surrender his wicket and Euan Kirk followed suit, scoring his first competitive run.

The innings closed on 74 - 5 from 53 - 4 after 12 overs but the most ecouraging feature was probably in the fielding as Daniel and Jamie both held on to good catches and no-one conceded any easy boundaries.

Under 13s Complete League Programme

A weakened Happy Faces/Lockerbie squad travelled to Galloway for their last League fixture last Friday, as several of the squad were away on holiday. Unfortunately, a further three selected players failed to turn up at the rendezvous on the day, which left us in the embarrassing position of arriving with only six players and requesting reinforcements from the opposition.

In fact the resulting 9 vs 8 format that resulted was a good advert for reducing the numbers at this level. Although the result unsurprisingly went to the well-organised Galloway outfit, there were some positives for the visitors and it was good to see Lachlan Eggo and Jamie Thomson in the team once again.

Skipper Jamie Crawford won the toss and invited Galloway to bat first, Montgomery and Ramsay both able to defend the better balls from Lachlan and Liam Rogerson to make 16 and 10 respectively. To their credit the visitors managed to hit back with a couple of decent run outs and four further wickets, Reece McNay and Jamie Crawford both succeeding with the ball. However the usual trail of wides and byes helped Galloway to a total of 107 for 6.

There was another familar story when Happy Faces/Lockerbie batted as the more experienced players again failed to defend the straight ball and the scoreline quickly plummeted to 12 for 5. With no prospect of victory, this time it was youngsters Reece McNay and Jamie Thomson who played the obstinate role, holding out for a considerable time until Jamie was eventually bowled for 1. Ali Naqvi (3 not out) continued in the same fashion and it looked like the team would at least bat out the overs until Reece was bowled for five off the very last delivery of the game. The low total of 35 was a tribute to Galloway's accurate bowling, which only conceded 19 extras.

Thanks should also go to Galloway for making a decent game of it and for providing an excellent tea, which was much appreciated by visiting players and adults alike.

Another U13 Loss

The Happy Faces SMCC/Lockerbie Under 13 Squad went down again in their encounter against Nunholm at the Kingholm last weekend, but at least managed to make a fight of it.

Cammie McNay faces the first ball

Batting first, they got off to the worst possible start when Cammie McNay was again run out early on and Ian Naysmith was clean bowled in the same over. Connor Lynch was well caught behind and Harshit Morisetty unluckily bowled when a ball that was going harmlessly wide ricocheted off his pad onto the stumps. Once Liam Rogerson was given lbw playing across a straight ball, the game looked all over as the home side had slumped to 9 for 5.

Liam plays and missesHowever Daniel Veitch and Ryan Geddes sensibly realised the best way forward was simply to play defensively and make sure they played out the twenty overs. By the time Ryan was well caught at short point for a steady six, the team could attack the last few balls and Daniel managed a nice four in the last over to help the total to 50 for 6.

Happy Faces were left wondering what might have been when Pethick-Reetz, who has been a thorn in their side every time the teams have met, was bowled by a corker from Cammie McNay for a duck. Ryan Geddes found a similar delivery to remove Jack but there were no more breakthroughs and Nunholm successfully reached the half century in the thirteenth over with Gilliland on 6 not out.

The overall display was more promising than the result suggests. The fielding, aided by sub Charlotte Bryden was more competent than in previous games, the bowlers conceded less wides and Connor Lynch had a reasonable game behind the stumps.

Lumb Stars

This week a well prepared Ashleigh team faced Burgh Boys on Wednesday night at the kingholm. While at six fifteen Ashleigh had the full eleven players on the park and waiting to start the opposition had only four men ready.

Skipper Ben Johnstone lost the toss and Burgh Boys elected to bat largely due to the lack of players who were there at the time. Nevertheless Ashleigh took the field with more than high confidence of coming out with a win.

Burgh Boys lost four quick wickets in the space of four over’s, due to some tight bowling from the openers Connor Bowie and John Woodhouse and were in trouble going into the fifth over, having scpred seven runs for four wickets.

Burgh Boys mounted a small come back with M Pumphrey and A Collingwood at the crease who brought the score to thirty four until Chris “Junior” Lumb struck and bowled a beauty of a ball to clean up Collingwood who was caught by Bowie.

Burgh Boys took another blow when Pumphrey was caught and bowled by skipper Ben Johnstone. The game changed a little in the favour of the away team when father and son “Flack” batted well together to take the score to sixty two until F Flack retired with a big hitting performance on 27. Corey “Shane Warne” Larsen cleaned up the last wicket of S Flack to finish the innings with Burgh Boys incredibly making 85 all out, a score which should have been much less. The bowling of Lee “Kebab Boy” Johnstone should also be acknowledged with a decent effort producing two wickets of three overs.

Burgh Boys took the field in a little more positive fashion than they started. The openers for Ashleigh, Skipper Johnstone and Arran Seymour batted well together until Ben Johnstone was caught behind by Sehid of some impressive off spin bowling by B. Flack. The other opener Seymour was the next to go in the same fashion as his skipper but coming off with an impressive score of seventeen. Ross Marscheider was the next to go when caught off the bowling of B Flack for eight. The score at this point was 31 for three. Lumb then strode to the crease feeling full of confidence. He and Andrew “reverse sweep” Geddes batted well together until Geddes was unlucky to be lbw to Collingwood after looking promising. Jamie “Virgil” Gibson then came to join Lumb at the crease. They both batted extremely well Jamie the first to retire on a maximum of 30. C Bowie then came in with Ashleigh needing only 4 runs too win. He contributed one to the score but Lumb was the one to finish Burgh Boys off and made a more than an impressive twenty three not out.

Chris Lumb took the Man of the Match award for an excellent bowling and batting performance.

John Woodhouse - 18/05/11

Under 11s Outgunned

The Happy Faces St Michael's Under Under XI team went down to a mature-looking Dumfries squad at Nunholm last Saturday, but did mount a reasonable challenge and just managed to survive their twenty overs.

Skipper Jamie Crawford was asked to bat first and Dumfries openers Grant and Andrew built a strong opening partnership in spite of some accurate bowling by Ryan Geddes and Harshit Morrisetty. Harshit in particular bowled extremely well, not conceding a wide and narrowly missing the stumps with good deliveries on several occasions. In the end it was Owen Harrison, Patrick Callaghan and Reece McNay who chipped in with wickets as Dumfries moved to a final total of 109 for 3. Unfortunately they were again assisted by some sloppy fielding by the Happy Faces, who allowed several needless boundaries.

In reply, Jamie Crawford and Connor Lynch started well until Jamie was brilliantly caught at mid off for 10. Harshit continued to play in the same vein until he was plumb lbw also for 10 and after eight overs, the St Michael's lads were still well in the hunt at 40 for 2. But after top scorer Connor, whose batting is much improved, was finally bowled for 18, the lower order could only contribute a few singles and Happy Faces were stranded on 66 for 8 by the end of the allocated overs.

The squad's batting and bowling are both coming on well but the vital difference between the sides was in the fielding and running between the wickets.

Ashleigh XI win again!

The Ashleigh XI Midweek League team took on Irving Meadow this past week, in a game which they won by a convincing 63 runs to maintain their 100% start to this years Midweek League campaign.

Ashleigh were quick to start off with the bat. Chris Brockwell, Jamie Gibson and Corey Larsen all smashed their way to 30’s in double quick time to give Ashleigh a superb start. The momentum was then maintained by Ross Marscheider who quickly smashed 14. Ashleigh finished their innings off on a massive 147 with Connor Bowie 24 not out and John woodhouse 5 not out.

When Ashleigh took the field John Woodhouse immediately grabbed the big wicket of J.Goodin. However, thanks to Matty Moss playing nicely for his 25 retired, Irving Meadow where still in with a shout. But wicket keeper Andrew Geddes was to take the tie away from them with 3 impressive stumpings. All the bowlers bowled well including Corey ‘Warney’ Larsen who took 2 wickets for just 4 runs with his 2 overs and Chris ‘Bieber’ Lumb who took 1 wicket for 5 runs from his 2 overs.

Overall, a good performance from Ashleigh who now turn their attention to the Police next week where they will be looking to maintain their winning streak.

The Ashleigh Ltd Man of the Match award went to Andrew Geddes for his three important and impressive stumpings.

Connor Bowie - 11/06/11

Batting Collapse

A major batting collapse marred a promising performance in the field as Happy Faces Saints/Lockerbie Colts went down by 25 runs against Galloway in glorious weather last Friday.

After being asked to bat by Skipper Ian Naysmith, the Galloway boys made a slow start against some good bowling by Harshit Morisetty and Cammy McNay, who both managed two maidens in their four over allocation. The visitors managed a recovery in the later overs thanks to a good 14 by Campbell but Saints fielding continued to be much improved. Galloway had been restricted to 71 - 4 off their twenty overs by the time Liam Rogerson completed a run out off David Smith's last ball.

However disaster was soon to strike when Owen Harrison, playing as a sub for the visitors returned the favour , hitting the stumps with a smart throw from mid-off to leave Cammy McNay some way out of his ground. Harshit and Naysmith were then both bowled playing across the line. This trend continued throught the innings as batter after batter missed straight balls and the Saints/Lockerbie combination were ousted for 46 in only thirteen overs.

Although the bowling was impressively accurate, the home team's poor batting clearly lost them this game, as Galloway had only managed a similar total at the same stage of their innings.

Colts Fail to Defend Useful Total

Happy Faces St Michael's/Lockerbie Colts took on Dumfries at Nunholm last Friday in a keenly contested match.

After Skipper Ian McNay chose to bat first the Saints/Lockerbie team posted what could have been a challenging total of 82 for 7 in their twenty overs. Young Harshit Morisetty was the mainstay of the innings with a cultured innings against some mixed Dumfries bowling and Naysmith weighed in with some powerful shots in the last five overs. With some more decisive running between the wickets, the Saints/Lockerbie line-up might have got somewhere near the 100 mark.

But the actual total proved to be inadequate mainly due to the excellence of the Dumfries opening partnership of Adam Gilliland and Grant Pethick-Reetz, who both scored chanceless maximums. Unfortunately, their job was also made easy by some poor ground fielding as some of the Saints youngsters misjudged the pace of the Nunholm outfield and allowed some early boundaries. Cammy McNay looked the most likely bowler to take a wicket but could not make the breakthrough.

Scores:

Happy Faces St Michael's/Lockerbie 82 for 7 (H Morisetty 16, I Naysmith 12, R Matthews 2-15, F Marshall 2-16)
Dumfries 83 for 2 (A Gilliland 25 ret, G Pethick-Reetz 25 ret)

Under 11s Look Promising

Saints' Happy Faces Under 11's had their first taste of action against Nunholm last Friday night in a T20 friendly, which was more about getting as many youngsters as possible playng than the result.

Skipper Jamie Crawford lost the toss and was asked to bat on the Kingholm 1 artificial with a shortened boundary. The Happy Faces generally looked much the better bowling side and Harshit, Ryan Geddes and Ben Porter, who has only just started playing the hardball game, all picked up useful wickets. However, powerful batters Pethick-Reetz, who was dropped twice, and Penrice formed a match winning partnership for the visitors, scoring 79 runs between them. Unfortunately, the Saints' youngsters failed to defend the boundaries properly and Nunholm eventually cruised to 118 for 3 with a flood of fours.

In reply, the Happy Faces struggled to hit a series of very slow deliveries at the start of their innings and, although Jamie Crawford carried his bat for 20 not out with good support from Reece McNay, only two boundaries were scored in a total of 66 for 2 from their twenty overs.

Running between the wickets could have been better but it was good to see that the bowling of several of our team members is starting to look threatening and the number of wides conceded is gradually falling.

Ashleigh maintain 100% Record in Midweek League

St. Michael's Cricket Club midweek side, now sponsored by Ashleigh Ltd (Scotland), took on the mighty Health Pros last Wednesday and ran out comfortable winners by eight wickets.

The Ashleigh side this season will consist of a significant number of the home-grown club junior players supported by this years overseas players Corey Larsen and Jamie Gibson, and a few older hands as and when required.

The Health Pros won the toss and decided to bat, skipper John Muttiah cleverly gambling that batting second in the Scottish gloom would not be easy for the home side, plus it would allow a few more of his own players the opportunity to turn up.

All of the Ashleigh youngsters got the opportunity to bowl, with Connor Bowie and John "Forrest Lump" Woodhouse being the pick with returns of 1-9 and 2-7 respectively. It was especially pleasing to see the continued return of Chris "Scarecrow" Lumb to the side and when he took a wicket with his final delivery, the Health Pros had been dismissed for 99 runs.

Arran Seymour sweepsIn reply Ashleigh got off to an excellent start when Gibson and U16 skipper Arran Seymour piled on the runs. Gibson retired on 25 and was soon joined by his opening partner who top scored for the side with 28 not out.

Corey Larsen continued where his countryman had left off, stroking the ball to all parts of the ground and again finished on 25 not out. Despite the loss of skipper Johnston and Bowie, it was left to Lumb and Woodhouse to see the hosts pass the finishing line in the 18th over.

The Ashleigh Ltd (Scotland) Man of the Match went to Arran Seymour for his excellent innings and taking a great catch again at gully.

Health Pros: 99 all out. F. Chaudrey 28 no, I. McKinnel 24. C. Bowie 3-0-9-1, J. Woodhouse 3-0-7-2, C. Larsen 4-0-9-1, L. Johnstone 2-0-8-0, K. Moore 2-0-15-1, J. Gibson 2-0-13-0, B. Johnston 2-0-23-0, C. Lumb 1.1-0-6-1.

Ashleigh X1: 100-2. A. Seymour 28no, J. Gibson 25no, C. Larsen 25no F. Chaudrey 4-0-15-1.

First Hardball Game for U13s

Our Happy Faces Under 13 Colts Squad had its first hardball practice game last Monday when a group of four Under 13s took on nine Under 12s in a 15 over knockaround at the Kingholm.

The challenge to the Under 13s, allowed to bat first, was to survive their allocated overs and then dismiss their younger rivals for a lesser total to claim victory. In the event, it was the younger squad who managed to pull off the win as they reached the target of 42 in the final over of the game.

Daniel Veitch carried his bat for the oldsters, making 10 not out after Ryan Geddes had bowled Ian Naysmith for four. Good support from Patrick Callaghan (four not out) meant that the older team were never in serious danger of losing all their wickets.

After a slow start against Liam Rogerson's bowling and losing Harshit Morisetty in the fourth over, Captain Jamie Crawford managed to up the tempo for the youngsters, top scoring with 13 not out. This time it was Reece McNay who played the supporting role, playing coolly for his four not out.

Most of all this game was about getting the feel of a full-scale cricket match but it was impressive to see that the batters chose their shots carefully, so that only two wickets fell in the whole thirty overs. We still need to work on the bowling though, as even the better bowlers produced several wides.
