The Brammer UK Ltd Under 16 Squad

Bellwood Thwarts Under 16s

Young versus old locked horns on Sunday as St Michael's Brammer UK Ltd Under 16s went down to a St Michael's Veterans XI by 2 runs in a thrilling game at the Kingholm.

McKinnell bowled Brockwell 0With legends such as the Bellwoods, Sid Oates, Colin Taylor, and Basher Henderson on display and all in the runs, the legends raced to 134 off their 30 overs. Top scorers were Greenock's Chris Bellwood 33 not out and Colin Taylor 21, who shared a 67 run partnership in the middle of the innings. Other fine knocks came from Kim Bellwood and Sid Oates who both contributed 15. Unluckiest was Ian McKinnel who fell to a huge turner from Brockwell to lose a longstanding wager. Best bowlers for the kids were Ben Johnston and Chris Brockwell.

After a fine tea provided by the juniors to their guests, Ross Crawford and Arran Seymour set off in solid fashion against some very tight bowling from Willie Woodhouse and Bellwood senior. Seymour was caught at gully for 4 off Woodhouse and Danny Heron went for 4, bowled Bellwood leaving the kids on 22 for 2 off 10 overs. Chris Brockwell then smashed a Chris Lumb plays to pointmurderous 35 and retired and Crawford also fell for a well earned 19.

With over 60 runs still needed Chris Lumb and kebab boy Lee Johnston entered the fray starting slowly but eventually going for their shots in another 50 partnership that almost got the team home. Lumb retired on 32 and McKinnel dismissed both Johnston for 10 and Geddes, bowled for a single. With 10 needed for victory a brave effort by Matthew Robinson almost won the game but the introduction of Chris Bellwood in the last over snuffed out any hopes the juniors had of a deserved victory as he demolished the timbers with frightening efficiency.

A good day out was had by all and it was good to see some old faces back at the Kingholm for a fixture that will surely be repeated at least once more this year.

Under 12's Outdone

St Michael's Happy Faces Under 12s squad had an even younger look to it when they took on Lockerbie Jamie plays to coverin a return Kwik Cricket fixture at the Kingholm last Sunday. Unfortunately the age difference was too much of a disadvantage for the home team this time as they went down by 44 runs.

Invited to bat first, The Happy Faces squad got off to a poor start when a series of chances found opposition hands. Only Harshit Morrisetty and Gianni Copland managed to make much headway against the Lockerbie attack, both playing carefully to avoid losing more wickets. However seven year olds Jamie Thomson and Reece McNay batted well in their first competitive game, Jamie hitting a fine straight four.

Jamie Crawford and partner Ian got Lockerbie off to a strong start, after which Saints were always struggling. A great catch by Emma Lumb and three late wickets from some good bowling helped reduce the deficit but Lockerbie ran out easy winners.

Under 12s in Nailbiting Finish!

St Michael's Happy Faces Under 12s' first competitive fixture ended in a tight finish last Sunday, when a very young looking team took on a an elder, but inexperienced Lockerbie squad in damp and windy conditions. Shortage of players led to an interesting Kwik Cricket seven versus six format with Saints' Jamie Dorans joining the Lockerbie team.

The incrediball skidded on sharply off the artificial and almost all batters had diffculty in timing their shots. Catherine watches the ball carefullyA wet outfield meant it was even harder to find the boundary.

Lockerbie batted first and were soon in trouble, losing three wickets in the first four overs to the Saints attack of Harshit Morrisetty, Robbie McIlwraith, Jamie Dalzell and Connor Lynch. But Lockerbie's remaining two pairs made good the deficit with some good running between the wickets and progressed to 19.

The Saints youngsters started well and Jamie Dalzell and Robbie McIlwraith took the total to eight after four overs, with Robbie looking for quick runs. Profiting from some wides and a nice four from Emma, Catherine Callaghan and Emma Lumb moved the total on to 15 and in sight of victory.

Unfortunately the third pair made no progress and Harshit, Connor looks for a big hitbatting with Connor had the task of of making up the deficit in the last two overs. With two balls to go the scores were level when the pair attempted a quick single off a bye and Connor was run out at the striker's end to give the Lockerbie boys a last minute victory against the odds.

This was a well-matched encounter which our Under 12s can be pleased with. The only fours in the game to come from the bat were hit by Robbie and Emma. Gianni Copland took the only catch and the bowlers conceded fewer wides than the visitors. But three wickets fell to run outs, so this is a part of the game the team will need to practice.

Rico’s XI juniors battle in vain against Colts

On Thursday evening Rico’s Takeaway XI were comfortably beaten by an experienced CC Colts side in overcast conditions.

Rico’s were invited to bowl first and the opening bowlers kept things tight early on, Chris Lumb in particular bowling a dangerous line. He was duly rewarded with the wicket of Dean Brotherstone, well caught at gully. This brought Douglas Brotherstone to the crease and, with Williams, the Colts put together a solid partnership. Following Brotherstone’s retirement, change bowlers Brockwell and Bowie made inroads and put Rico’s into a strong position midway through the innings. Youngster Lee Johnstone also bowled well, backed up by committed fielding from Danny Heron. Geary and Potts hit out in the latter stages and, when the innings was ended by a great catch from wicketkeeper Andrew Geddes, the Colts had put 128 runs on the board.

Brockwell and Bowie, opening the innings for Rico’s, took 13 off the first over and pushed the ball around to good effect thereafter. Bowie batted sensibly for his 14 before following Brockwell back to the pavilion, chipping a drive to cover. Kieron Moore batted well in partnership with Dougie Sloan, who was run out for 16, but by the halfway mark it was obvious that Rico’s weren’t going to challenge the total. Presented with an opportunity for match practice all of the juniors got a bat, Lumb in particular taking advantage to score an aggressive 13. The innings ended on 83-8 after the 20 overs and, despite the loss, some valuable batting experience was gained.

The Rico’s Takeaway Man of the Match was Connor Bowie for his all-round contribution.

Under 16's Win Again

On a sunny Monday evening this week at the Kingholm, Dumfries' two Under 16 junior cricket teams locked horns for a much awaited 20 over thrash when the Brammer UK Ltd Saints outfit hosted their local rivals from up the river.

Dumfries batted first and within seven overs were reduced to 23 for 5 by the St Michael's opening attack of John Woodhouse, Connor Bowie and then Chris Lumb. Todd Rafferty was first to go, acrobatically caught by Arran Seymour at gully off Woodhouse for three runs. Dean Brotherstone's stumps were then rearranged by Woodhouse for six before Connor Bowie joined the party by bowling opener Alex Long for three, and Chris Lumb bowled Penrice for two, which was followed by the superb run out of Aiden Collingwood for a single.

The Dumfries innings was saved by two controlled innings by Chris Edgar and youngster Ben Holland, who batted through the rest of the innings and took the score to 68 off 20 overs. Holland finished with 18 and partner Edgar 12. St Michael's skipper Ben Johnston bowled a superb spell of off spin, his four overs going for only eight runs. But
the pick of the bowlers was Woodhouse who bagged the two danger men.

The Brammer UK St Michael's innings got off to a shaky start with Arran Seymour run out for 1 and Connor Bowie caught off Aiden Collingwood for 5, leaving the hosts at 22 for 2. However captain Johnston and number 4 Ross Crawford batted solidly taking the score to 64 before Crawford was bowled by Collingwood for 14. Johnston remained undefeated on 27 as Chris Lumb smashed the remaining runs in double quick time.

A seven wicket win was chalked up by the Saints juniors who all contributed to the win. Man of the match was captain Ben Johnston who led from the front with both bat and ball in a game that was played in good spirit by both sides.

Brammer UK Ltd Saints U16’s gain revenge on Langholm

Last Sunday Brammer UK Ltd St. Michael’s Cricket Club U16’s hosted Langholm for the second time this season aiming to reverse the outcome of the previous fixture.

Skipper Ben Johnston won the toss and decided to bat. Unfortunately, the ever improving Arran Seymour played down the wrong line to an early delivery and was dismissed for one.
His opening partner Ross Crawford again looked in good nick but was bowled by the entertaining Bell for eight. Skipper Johnston played on for three leaving his side teetering on 15-3 from nine overs.

As the rain continued to fall, Chris Lumb played a gem of an innings, keeping out the bad ball and punishing every short ball, especially outside of the off stump. As partners came and went, Lumb continued to accumulate runs and only Connor Bowie provided any long-term company.

When Lumb was eventually out for a quite brilliant 34, Saints U16’s were on 72-6 in the 24th over. John Woodhouse looked the part in the last over and was really unlucky to be run out for three, when perhaps he should have shown the same level of selfishness as his batting partner and stood his ground.

Brammer Saints U16’s finished their innings on 81 from their 25 allotted overs.

Langholm’s reply got off to the worst possible start with opener Gregory Robinson bowling Bell for a duck, and he soon gained his second victim sending “Bella” back to the pavilion for one. Opening partner Bowie bowled tightly but finished wicketless.

Man of the moment Lumb was brought into the attack and soon had opening bat Fletcher LBW for eight. Matthew Robinson followed his brothers lead and dismissed Langholm skipper Masterson for two aided by a sharp catch by his sibling.

When Mahmood was run out by some sharp thinking by keeper Seymour, Langholm were in real trouble. Lumb picked up his second and final wicket bowling Murray and the club’s professional scorer Kieran Moore also got in on the act bowling Morrison for seven.

Skipper Johnston had unselfishly given all his bowlers a shot before introducing himself into the attack, and when he did it took him a mere four balls to claim two wickets – one with a sharp catch behind the stumps by Seymour – and wrap up the Langholm innings for 35 runs.

This victory is further proof that all the hard work the boys are doing at Monday night training sessions are starting to produce results.

The Brammer UK Ltd Man of the Match award went to Chris Lumb for his brilliant 34 runs with the bat and two wicket haul.

Scores: Brammer UK Ltd Saints U16’s 81-7 (C Lumb 34, C Bowie 11 n.o. G Masterson 3-17, S Morrison 2-22) : Langholm U16’s 35 all out: ( B Johnston 2-1, G Robinson 2-4, C Lumb 2-11)

Ricos XI Storm to Victory over Lockerbie

Last Wednesday Ricos T20 Takeaway XI took on Lockerbie in the John Henderson & Sons Midweek League, in what turned out to be a nice evening for cricket despite a damp afternoon.

Lockerbie were asked to bat first and were greeted by excellent opening spells from Connor Bowie and Chris Brockwell. Brockwell bowled a tight 4 overs for 14 runs and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket. However, the pick the bowlers was Connor Bowie who bowled 4 overs for 3 wickets for 18 runs, removing danger man Steven Crawford thanks to an excellent catch from Derek Heron and also well supported by some excellent keeping from David Fallas.

Skipper Brockwell then introduced overseas player Mark Smith, who after receiving some treatment from Veitch got his man clean bowled for a very well made 21. Moore then removed Stevenson for 6 while Andrew Geddes operated from the other end. Geddes bowled tight lines and was supported by some superb fielding with the highlight being a sharp run out by Smith. Rico’s fielding was sharp throughout especially from youngster Daniel Heron.

Lockerbie got past the 100 mark when St.Michael’s U-16 player Ross Crawford entered to and helped push the score along to a respectable 112.

The Ricos reply got off to a flyer with openers Marschieder and Derek Heron. Heron reached his retirement rapidly and his opening partner soon retired as well. Daniel Heron was then unlucky to drag a delivery onto his own stumps. This brought Smith into the fray and he smashed his retirement in double quick time leaving U-16 regular Bowie and junior coach Fallas to see the side through to victory.

Bowie was undefeated on 6 while Fallas attained 26 runs, reaching his retirement in the process of hitting the winning runs.

The Ricos Takeaway man of the match went to Connor Bowie for his bowling and batting performance.

Brammer UK Ltd Saints U16’s Claim First Victory

Last Sunday saw Brammer UK Ltd St. Michael’s Cricket Club U16’s travel to picturesque Great Corby on the hottest day of the summer so far.

Saints U16’s travelled with eight regular junior players, a couple of grisly old teenagers in Chris Brockwell and Ross Marscheider, and guest junior player of the day Niall Alexander, to take on a team that consisted of five adult and six junior players. The format of the match was 30 overs a side with a maximum spell of five overs for each bowler.

On winning the toss the hosts decided to bat. The ever improving Gregory Robinson opened the bowling and at the other end Alexander showed why he is such an exciting prospect. Niall claimed a wicket with his very first ball, dismissing Lythgoe with an away swinging yorker that uprooted off stump.

Robinson got in on the act in the very next over, gaining revenge on the opposition skipper Spencer who had just smashed him for four boundaries in the previous five deliveries, trapping him plumb LBW for 17.

The next passage of play turned into the Seymour-Alexander show, with two quite brilliant catches in gully by Arran Seymour from Niall’s bowling, both batsmen out for ducks, leaving the Great Corby innings teetering on the brink. Niall’s three wickets cost a miserly three runs in a truly impressive spell.

When change bowlers Lumb and skipper Johnston were introduced into the attack, it was thought that the batting side would look to consolidate and try to rebuild. However, the Corby batsmen obviously wanted to get out of the searing sun and into the shade, and tried – in vain – to put every ball out of the park.

Johnston claimed one wicket, caught in the shade of the trees by Marcheider, but the destroyer of the late/middle order was Chris Lumb. Lumb aka “Junior” had got out of his sick bed to show his commitment to his teammates, and his nagging line and length proved too much for the hosts. Junior took four quick wickets, aided by some great catching, especially one at cover by Matthew Robinson, and when Little was Junior’s last victim, Corby were all out for 59 in only 12.5 overs.

This was the Brammer UK Ltd Saints U16’s best performance in the field so far this year, with all of the bowlers looking dangerous, and the fielding of a really high standard led by keeper Geddes and the efforts of Seymour and Matthew Robinson in the outfield particularly taking the eye.

After a quick turnaround, skipper Johnston and Seymour showed a mature approach in their batting against the adult bowlers of Corby, namely keeping out the good ball and hitting the bad one.

At one point it looked like Saints U16’s were on their way to an incredible ten wicket win, but unfortunately Seymour played on for 11 with the score on 33 in 10 overs.

Johnston played his best innings of the season so far at the other end, man of the hour Lumb came to the crease and obviously decided he needed to get back to his sickbed quickly, proceeding to smash four quick boundaries to get Saints U16’s past the winning line.

Brammer UK Ltd Saints U16’s rattled up the 60 runs required in only 13.5 overs to produce a comprehensive nine wicket victory, and one which these young players should all be very proud of.

Thanks must go to the Great Corby players and tea-ladies who were great hosts and very magnanimous in defeat. Saints U16’s look forward to welcoming the Great Corby side in the return fixture at Kingholm Park later on in the summer.

The Brammer UK Ltd man of the match award went to Chris Lumb for his four wicket haul and quick fire 16 not out.

Scores: Great Corby CC 59 all out (Mally 18, Spencer 17 ; Lumb 4-14, N Alexander 3-3.) :
Brammer UK Ltd Saints U16’s 60-1 (Johnston 23 no, Lumb 16 no, Seymour 11.)

No Easy Day's Work for Seniors

Last Sunday it was left to the Saint Michael's veterans to provide opposition for the club's Under 16 Junior XI, after the scheduled opposition were unable to raise a squad. It looked to be a stern test for the youngsters, even though they were almost at full strength.

But openers Arran Seymour and Ross Crawford coped well with the tight lines of opening bowlers Woodhouse and Brockwell and the score progressed smoothly to 30 - 0 off ten overs. Crawford was eventually bowled for 12 by Aussie pro Mark Smith, whose usual searing pace was not curtailed by a four pace run up restriction.

At the other end 60-year-old Colin Taylor accounted for the dangerous Chris Lumb and John Woodhouse in a controlled five over spell, which only Seymour dealt with well. After Danny Heron was bowled by Marscheider, big Greg Robinson showed the gathering spectators signs of his power, smashing four boundaries in his quick fire 17.

Robinson and Andrew Geddes both fell to the tricky leg spin of Ahsanul Kishore. Captain Mike Lumb eventually bowled Connor Bowie for five and had Seymour stumped by Brockwell for 29 from the last ball of the innings, by which time the juniors had managed 91 in their 30 overs against some very stiff bowling.

With 20 overs to play as opposed to their opponents 30, Marscheider and Kirkpatrick strode to the crease expecting an easy day's work but Kirkpatrick was soon on his way, bowled first ball by Robinson who produced some excellent deliveries in his three overs. Connor Bowie then had Armstrong caught for four by Woodhouse and when Sandy McNay was caught for nine by Robinson off Ben Johnston, the seniors were in some trouble at 50 for 3. However following Marscheider's retiral at 25, the game was soon brought to an end by Colin Taylor 13 not out and Ahsanul Kishore 25 not out.

There were many plusses for the kids, not least the fact that they lasted the full 30 overs against first and second team bowlers. The fielding was excellent and the Juniors' man of the match was Greg Robinson for his entertaining innings of 17, fine bowling spell, good fielding and acrobatic catch.

Next Sunday's game is at Great Corby in Carlisle where tough junior opposition is expected.

Saints U-16’s get First Taste of Competitive Cricket

Last Sunday saw newly formed St. Michael’s Cricket Club U-16 X1 host Langholm at Kingholm Park in their first fixture of the season in overcast and sometimes downright wet conditions.

Both teams agreed to a 32 over a side game with a maximum of 4 overs each bowler to ensure every player was involved in the game.

Saints skipper Ben Johnston won the toss and asked Langholm to bat on an early season green-top. Openers Connor Bowie and Chris Lumb made early breakthroughs for Saints in their opening spells, and Todd Rafferty and Keiron Moore did the same leaving Langholm on 55-4.

Langholm youngster J Bell took the attack to the other five Saints bowlers used and kept everyone entertained with his batting and amusing patter out in the middle. When Bowie returned for his second spell, Bell was finally dismissed, caught at mid-off by Muir, for an excellent 44.

Langholm finished their innings on 132-5 off their allocated 32 overs. Saints U-16’s can reflect on too many wides being bowled (25) and a few instances of not enough commitment to put hands and body in front of the ball, despite some excellent fielding in the deep by Gregory Robinson, during their time in the field.

In reply, Saints openers Todd Rafferty and Ross Crawford played correctly and got the team off to a solid start. When Rafferty was out bowled for 12, Saints had reached 32. Crawford was next to go for his second excellent innings in as many weeks reaching 20.
Middle order batsmen Chris Lumb (19), Connor Bowie (14) Dylan Muir (4) and Andrew Geddes (7) all tried to push the run-rate along while still playing correctly which both pleased and impressed their coaches. Gregory “big man” Robinson threw the willow at the end as did skipper Ben Johnston, but there was not enough time to get past Langholm’s total.

Saints U-16’s finished on a credible 94-6 off their 32 overs with G Masterton being the pick of the Langholm bowlers with 2-6 in his 4 overs.

The club would like to thank their visitors for their friendship and sportsmanship, even when youthful exuberance and excitement occasionally took over!

Saints U-16 man of the match went to Connor Bowie for his all round performance with bat and ball. The next dedicated U-16 fixture will take place on 16th May against local rivals Galloway. However, the club will continue to include the majority of our junior players in many weekend fixtures.

Saints overseas player Mark Smith has started free cricket coaching in local many primary and secondary schools in Dumfries and pupils are reminded that they are more than welcome to attend junior training at Kingholm Park every Monday night from 6.15pm. Anyone interested in getting more details can call Head Coach, Davy Fallas on 07739 261 305.
