It looks like we have at last identified a spot-on source of club funds in the shape of easyfundraising.org.uk In just a few weeks since we opened an account for the club, we have already raised over £25.

This is how it works. If you register at www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/stmcc then shop online using the sponsored merchants featured on the site or through their search engine stmcc.easysearch.org.uk you can receive generous discounts and a percentage of the purchase price goes to the club.

Please register as above and remember to look first at the easyfundraising.org.uk sites first when shopping online. It's a really simple way of supporting the club by spending money you were going to spend anyway.

A Farewell to Ahsanul

Thoughts of many of our players and supporters will currently be with former First XI batsman, Ahsanul Kishore, who is returning to Bangladesh via America in order to rejoin the family business.

AhsanulAhsanul joined the club in 2008 while studying at Crichton University Campus and his enthusiastic batting and fielding was one of the few highlights in a poor season for the First XI. Always working hard at his game, he found his feet with a vengeance in the succeeding two seasons, topping the First XI batting statistics with an excellent average of 54 in the 2010 promotion campaign.

Not just one to turn up on match days only, Ahsanul was always willing to help with jobs around the club and at various times helped with recruitment of new players, building and maintenance work and negotiated several ball sponsorships for the 2011 season.

Ahsanul became a well-known figure around Dumfries and there was a good turn out for his farewell do on 29th September when his many friends and acquaintances came along to wish Ahsanul, Holly and Kazaan all the best for the future.

Clear Up Day at Kingholm

There will be an End of Season Clear Up at the Kingholm on Sunday 23rd October from 9.30 a.m. All available members are requested by the Club Committee to attend.

Moving stuff to the shed

Some of the jobs that will need to be done include moving the sightscreens and covers to a safe position for the winter, cleaning up around the ground and pavilion, burning rubbish, and tidying the kit in the shed.

And we should find time for a cup of tea as well...

Saints' Juniors Enjoy End of Season BBQ

On Sunday 4th September, over thirty boys and girls from the St. Michael's Cricket Club junior section celebrated another successful season with a fun day and barbeque.

Having delivered free coaching at Brownhall, Caerlaverock, Calside, Georgetown, Laurieknowe, Lochmaben, Lockerbie, New Abbey, St. Andrew's, St. Michael's and Troqueer, the numbers of boys and girls taking part in Monday night coaching sessions ranged from an average of 35 to a seasons high of 64 on a single night.

Games were fulfilled by both the U12 and U10 teams during the 2011 season and while some results did not go as hoped, there was a definite improvement in the standard of play as the season progressed. It is planned to run several fixtures for both of these sides next season as well as a girls' team for the full season.

Those present at the fun day enjoyed activities including continuous cricket, distance hitting contest, throwing at the stumps, and bowling coaching. However, the highlight for many was watching the coaches attempting not to burn their hands as they flipped the numerous burgers and sausages on offer.

Ryan receives his awardThe following youngsters were deservedly presented with their awards by club coaches:

Happy Faces U12 Player of the Year – Ryan Geddes (pictured right receiving his award from Club Captain Derek Heron and John Woodhouse representing Happy Faces Nursery)

Happy Faces U10 Player of the Year – Cameron Barnett

Most Improved Players – David Smith and Emily Melville

St Michael's Cricket Club is always on the look out for new players and just as important, volunteers to help with our thriving junior section. If anyone would like to know how to get involved with the club, particularly the junior section, please contact head coach David Fallas on 07739 261 305.

Saints Celebrate Another Successful Season

Last Saturday saw a large contingent of the St. Michael's Cricket Club family meet up at the Mount Sydney and celebrate another successful season both on and off the park.

On the park, DMPS St. Michael's (1st X1) were narrowly pipped by Prestwick by only 0.1% for the WDCU Premiership title and what would have been their second consecutive title and promotion.

John Pagan & Son Kingholm (2nd X1) consolidated their position in the WDCU Championship, the most pleasing aspect being that several of the younger players played prominent parts in the side and will be looking to take leading roles in the new season and beyond.

Arran Seymour (l) receives his awardYouth development at the club took another positive step forward as the Ashleigh side (Midweek X1) were crowned joint winners of the John Henderson midweek league. The side consisted of eight regular players of age 17 and under.

Off the park the club continued its community focus by completing its second consecutive year of free community cricket coaching as ECB qualified coaches Corey Larsen and Jamie Gibson, both from Wellington, New Zealand, visited several local primary schools over several weeks.

The programme was generously funded by both The Lord's Taverners and The Postcode Lottery, and over fifty sessions were delivered and approximately 2,500 boys and girls in classes between P5-P7 took part.

The club would like to thank the following partnership schools for their hospitality towards Corey and Jamie: Brownhall, Caerlaverock, Calside, Georgetown, Laurieknowe, Lochmaben, Lockerbie, New Abbey, St. Andrew's, St. Michael's and Troqueer.

Facilities at Kingholm Park were also significantly improved and all players enjoying playing on the relayed square provided by well-known and respected ground and square developers Simpson & Partners of Ayr.

On the night, various players were presented with club awards, aided by some quality speeches!!

The new cricket season is still six months away but the club are busily preparing for 2012. If anyone would like to know how to get involved with the club, particularly with its work in the community please contact Derek Heron on 07894 193 412.

Free Cricket Coaching – A Great Success!

Corey and Jamie with the Caerlaverock P1 - P4 groupDMPS St Michael's Cricket Club recently finished its second consecutive year of free community cricket coaching, with ECB qualified coaches Corey Larsen and Jamie Gibson, both from Wellington, New Zealand, visiting several local primary schools over the last six weeks.

The programme was generously funded by both The Lord's Taverners and The Postcode Lottery, with over fifty sessions delivered and approximately 2,500 boys and girls in classes between P5-P7 taking part. Corey and Jamie delivered sessions that concentrated on fun, participation, and enjoyment, while at the same time enhancing the key skills required for playing the game of cricket.

The club would like to thank the following partnership schools for their hospitality towards Corey and Jamie, and also thank all the boys and girls for their participation; we really hope you enjoyed it! Brownhall, Caerlaverock, Calside, Georgetown, Laurieknowe, Lochmaben, Lockerbie, New Abbey, St. Andrew's, St. Michael's and Troqueer.

Lockerbie Primary School, Head Teacher, Karen Carter said of the coaching programme "Our P6 and P7 pupils have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions. I was very impressed by Jamie and Corey's attitude to their sport and to making it the best experience for our pupils. Cricket is a sport which none of my staff have experience of teaching so the sessions offered have allowed my pupils to develop skills in another area under the health and wellbeing banner which is so important in the Curriculum for Excellence.

"I look forward to working with you again in the future."

Jamiw and Corey with the Caerlaverock P5 - P7 groupCorey Larsen on behalf of the club said "Sport plays a big part in keeping youngsters active and helps maintain their overall health and wellbeing. Jamie and I are grateful for the opportunity to visit these eleven schools and play our part in helping the boys and girls stay active and introduce many of them to the great game of cricket for the first time. We would encourage all the boys and girls who took part in the programme and also those who we didn't visit this year but are interested in keeping fit and playing cricket, to come down to Kingholm Park, Dumfries every Monday from 6-8pm to our club junior training nights.

"Recently we were absolutely delighted when 33 boys and girls turned up for Monday night training session in terrible weather conditions. It was really encouraging not just for the club for the game as a whole in the region."

Cricket for boys and girls aged between 7-16 is still very high on the clubs agenda despite the schools programme coming to an end. Every Monday night, training/coaching takes place at Kingholm Park, where Corey and Jamie – together with six other ECB qualified coaches – will continue to help local youngsters enjoy and develop their game. The first session for everyone is completely free.

For youngsters who wish to get involved in playing in structured games there are plenty of playing opportunities for those who are keen at the following levels:

  • U16's
  • U12's
  • U10's
  • Girls Team – due to the significant numbers of girls now taking part in our Monday night sessions, it is anticipated that a couple of games can be arranged very soon!!

DMPS Saints are now actively looking to raise further funding to allow the programme to be repeated for the third straight year in 2012 and beyond. Any bodies interested in supporting further programmes and any local primary schools that are interested in taking part in our free sessions should contact Derek Heron on 07894 193 412.

The clubs work in the community will continue throughout the cricket season, working with Dumfries & Galloway Council Active schools delivering taster sessions over the next four weeks at even more local schools.

Community Volunteers Needed

As DMPS St. Michael's Cricket Club looks to continue its increasing work in our community, we are looking for volunteers to help with our work.

Even for those who don't want to play the game, there are almost limitless opportunities to get involved within our club.

Volunteers are vital to the health and development of grassroots cricket and DMPS Saints. Without them, the future of the beautiful game at all levels in our region would be in jeopardy.

Anyone with some time to spare throughout the year - and in particular between April-August – there's a role waiting for you at St. Michael's Cricket Club and no matter how small the time you can commit, you can make a difference.

All interested volunteers can contact Derek Heron on 07894 193 412 where options can be fully discussed.

Saints Are Nithsdale Club Of The Year

Last Friday week DMPS St Michael's Cricket Club received the prestigious accolade of the 2010 Nithsdale Sports Council Club of the Year Award.

Saints were recognised not only for their success on the field last year, but more for the hard work done off the park that has seen the significant upgrading of facilities at Kingholm Park, the development of the junior Corey Larsen and Jamie Gibsonsection which saw numbers double in 2010, and the work that the club continually does within our community.

We have continued our free cricket coaching programme to local primary schools in 2011 – 11 primary schools throughout Dumfries and Galloway – with overseas players/qualified coaches Corey Larsen and Jamie Gibson delivering sessions in each.

It is hoped that these sessions will encourage more boys and girls of all ages to take up the game of cricket, and everyone interested in playing the game regardless of ability are welcome to attend our junior practices each Monday 6-8 p.m. at Kingholm Park, Dumfries.

Anyone looking for more information on our Monday night sessions or the work we do in the community can contact Head Coach, Davy Fallas on 07739 261 305 or Schools Coach, Corey Larsen on 07565 095 855.

Cricket on Criffel

Several St Michael's junior cricketers showed just how much they are looking forward to the coming season last Sunday - by playing a game of Kwik Cricket on top of Criffel!

The impromptu game in this unlikely location was for the benefit of members of St Michael's Brammer UK Ltd Under 16 squad, who were raising money for a set of cricket shirts to wear in this summer's fixtures.

A total of eleven hardy souls set off in summer-like conditions from the car park at Ardwall Farm as the thermometer touched 15C. Conditions remained sunny for the first twenty minutes' ascent, so that it wasn't just the fast bowlers who shed their sweaters.

On top of CriffelAs the gradient became steeper, the juniors drew ahead of the accompanying adults and it became clear that the first to reach the summit would be the party's fittest member - Jasper the dog.

After several rests and much foot-slogging, the party gradually emerged on the summit of Criffel, where they were greeted by an icy westerly blast and hot soup kindly supplied by Head Coach Davey Fallas. To the surprise of the few hikers huddled behind Douglas's Cairn, stumps then emerged from the rucksacks and play commenced when Arran Seymour elected to bat first, facing some fiery bowling from Neve Muir on a unrolled pitch that offered considerable assistance to the seamers.

Wickets tumbled quickly as the bowlers found the away-swinging yorker a deadly weapon in the Seymour to N. Muirgailforce wind but the batters retaliated by hitting the ball into the bog at long on or hard-to-reach spots behind the cairn and taking a dozen or so runs while it was retrieved. Eventually, an honourable draw was agreed once the refreshments ran out and everyone made their way back down towards Loch Kindar in beautiful late afternoon sunshine.

One disadvantage of playing cricket on the top of Criffel is the lack of showering facilities but a couple of players amused their team mates by taking an early bath in the Craigrockall Burn, fully clothed.

Overall, it was a fun experience for all concerned as well as a useful fundraiser and a historical event - the first ever time a game of Kwik Cricket has been played on Criffel. Unless of course, you know better...

The Brammer UK Ltd Man of the Match Award went to Ben Johnston for his stupendous mudslide.

New Coaching Structure Announced

Brammer UK Under 16 XI2010 proved to be a break out year for our junior section.

With over a dozen schools receiving free cricket coaching, followed by a hugely successful Kwik Cricket Festival, junior numbers at the club doubled and the future of the club gained a well-deserved fillip.

In 2011, a bigger and better schools programme providing approximately 262 hours of free cricket coaching will be run. This free benefit to our community has been made possible following much appreciated financial support from both The Lord’s Taverners and The People’s Postcode Trust.

To accommodate potential new junior members generated from this year's programme it has been decided to restructure the club's junior section for 2011 and beyond.
